Thank you
for your interest in Rocky Mountain School! The goal of the
admission process is to determine if a prospective student
is a good overall fit so that he/she will have a successful
learning experience at RMS. The process is geared to help
parents, teachers and the student work as a team in making
this assessment. If at any point during this process you
have questions or concerns, we invite you to share them with
us. You can request an admission packet which contains all
the necessary forms and more information by contacting Lisa
Michael, Admissions Coordinator, at lisa.michael@rms.org or
by calling her at 303.545.9230 ext 104.
Step One: First Contact
If you are interested in learning more about RMS and whether
RMS might be an option for your child, call or email Lisa
Michael, Admissions Coordinator. She will answer many of
your questions and schedule you for one of the monthly
orientations or an individual school tour.
Step Two: Parent Orientations
The monthly orientations provide an opportunity for parents
to meet Barbara Mitchell Hutton, founder and Director of
RMS. She will share information about the school’s
evolution and curriculum, and giftedness in general. The
hours of the orientations are 9 a.m. to noon, allowing parents
the time to speak openly about their children and ask questions.
There is an extensive tour of the school while classes
are in session.
If you are unable to come to one of the scheduled orientations,
you can visit the school by scheduling an individual appointment
with the Admissions Coordinator.

Step Three: Application and Testing
Once you visit the school, you will probably have a sense
about whether the philosophy, curriculum and culture are
compatible with your child and family. To apply to the
school, submit up-to-date standard IQ testing (including
subtest scores and a learning-style assessment), a self-perception
assessment, and a completed application form accompanied
by the nonrefundable application fee of $350. Although
not required, recent achievement tests are useful in helping
us understand your child and in consideration in classroom
placement.
The Confidential Teacher Feedback Form is located in the
admission packet along with the other forms. Please give
this form to your child’s most recent teacher. The
form is confidential. The teacher is asked to mail the completed
form directly to Rocky Mountain School. This will be added
to your child’s application.
Step Four: Classroom Visit
Once all the application and supporting documents have been
received, the Admission Committee will review the information
in order to determine if the applicant appears to be a
good match with the RMS learning environment. If so, the
your child will be asked to spend at least two or three
days in the classroom we expect he/she to be placed in.
During the classroom visit the teachers will assess social
and academic compatibility with the class. We expect your
child to make a similar assessment about whether the school
meets her/his needs and expectations.
Step Five: Admission Decision
Our goal is to view each applicant as a whole child to determine
whether he/she is a good match at RMS and can have a successful
learning experience at our school. After the visit, all
the information submitted by parents, prior teachers, the
RMS faculty and feedback from you and your child is reviewed
by the admissions committee. The Admission Coordinator
will notify you of the decision by phone. A letter confirming
the decision will be set to you from the Executive Director.
In the event the class in which the prospective student
would be placed is full, the student will be placed in a
waiting pool. Students will be selected from the waiting
pool to fill openings as they become available.
Rocky Mountain School gives special consideration to siblings
of current students and alumni. |
