MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER DOESN’T QUITE DESCRIBE IT….
Middle School teacher opening for Fall 2008

Our students need a Renaissance man or Renaissance woman who recognizes and understands connections, contradictions and patterns that weave through time and space, who can help connect the dots, can ask new questions and help students formulate their own. This must be accomplished with flexibility, patience and a sense of adventure. You must appreciate delving deep as well as broad into a subject. Language arts and humanities will be your primary area of instruction but a single discipline will not be enough. Your passion for knowledge, your enthusiasm for life, your good humor, your compassion and your commitment to enjoyment of the journey will be a model for a life well lived.

Rocky Mountain School is a nationally recognized program serving gifted students. It is a program that reflects the best practices, research and understanding of gifted middle school age students as well as high level content and expectations. It’s about their intellectual development but equally about their emotional, social, spiritual and leadership development. Connecting middle school students in authentic experiences with the global community is one of the foundations of this experiential program. There are broad program goals for the middle school. How those are reached is wide open.

The “teacher” of this group of learners, ranging in age from 11 to 14, is mentor, guide, cheerleader, coach, role model and fellow learner. Integrating all the curriculum content science, literature, mathematics, social studies makes it meaningful and engaging. The small middle school, fewer than 20 students, provides the opportunity to know and respond individually to each student, their learning style, interests and personality.

The students have a strong foundation and, for the most part, need high school level academic content. Our students typically learn two to six years above grade level so content must be rigorous while taking into account the social/emotional development of middle school age students. They are exploring who they are, what they think and believe separate from their peers and adults.

Expeditions, both local and more far flung, provide a way to integrate learning, social skills, expand the boundaries of the students comfort zone and create connections with communities and people beyond their world view. Service learning brings them in touch with the headlines and the people, environment and situations that make them.

An integrated program, offering ample opportunity for authentic application of learning is most appropriate. Social studies with authentic learning through community service will make learning meaningful. Language arts including literature from a variety of time periods, cultures, genres and viewpoints as well as writing and communication will round out their experience.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated with plenty of energy, an abundant sense of humor and the demonstrated ability to bring high-level challenges and skills in creative and innovative ways. You must be invigorated by learners who think outside the box. Your communication skills with students, colleagues and parents must be exceptional. Your superior organizational and planning skills will be essential. Your skills in incorporating technology in the learning process should be on par with the students’ skills and interests.

A Masters Degree in Gifted Education, a Masters with emphasis in Gifted Education or a Gifted Education Endorsement is an advantage. A minimum of three years teaching at the middle/high school level is preferred. IB and/AP experience is desirable. Experience with and an understanding of gifted middle school students is a required. The beginning salary range of high $30’s – mid $40s will be based on experience and education. There is a benefits package and professional development opportunities. Applicants with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHER
Opening for fall 2008

Do you have an excess of energy, a calming nature while in the eye of the hurricane of excited 4 and 5 year old learners, a great sense of humor and teach by discovery? Can you guide pre-kindergarten age children some of whom can read, some love math, some science, some EVERYTHING and all need to learn to share, sing and dance and rest a bit after lunch?

Are you invigorated by learners who think outside the box?  Do you have the flexibility to scrap your lesson plan and go with the teachable moment?  Can you shelve all you have been taught about who can learn what at a certain age?  Do you get chills at the notion of developing your class curriculum to meet the learning levels of your students instead of a standardized test?  Are you comfortable not knowing all the answers?  Do you know how to ask the right questions? Do you enjoy a good joke?  Can you delight in the unexpected?

Successful teachers at RMS must be highly motivated with plenty of energy, an abundant sense of humor and the demonstrated ability to bring high-level information and skills to young students in creative and innovative ways. Expect the learners to be intense, sensitive and passionate.

Your small class will provide an opportunity for you to really know your students and their families
