Cheryl BioMusic and Math Instructor, received her Bachelors of Music Education from the University of New Hampshire, with a minor in mathematics. Her major instrument is the French horn. She has been playing professionally with the Flagstaff Brass Quintet for 21 years, the Autumnus Woodwind Quintet for 2 years and played for the Colorado Wind Ensemble for 14 years. She has taught private horn lessons and has performed instrument demonstrations for several schools. She was the choir director for St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Boulder for seven years. She initiated and directs the RMS chorus and bell choir, teaches general music classes to all students, teaches a math class, and leads a weekly hobby club. Cheryl and the students produce several musical events during the year.  Cheryl and her math class built a 47 foot outdoor walking labyrinth on the school grounds in the spring of 2006. This is her eleventh year teaching music at Rocky Mountain School.  Cheryl enjoys reading and creative knitting during her free time.

In describing the type of teacher Cheryl strives to become, she says
“I want to recognize each person I meet and work with as a unique individual, with hopes, dreams and thoughts of their own. I want to give each student the opportunity to be seen and heard; to help each student recognize his/her unique voice, and give each student time to express him/herself. I want to allow the students experience the wonder of their bodies through movement and dance, listening, singing, and playing instruments. I want to give them opportunities for performance – so they can experience the joy and excitement of sharing their talents, working alone or together. I want to challenge them to use their imaginations, to take risks and experiment with their creativity. I want to help them acquire the tools that they need to meet the challenges of life; to help them know what questions to ask and where to look for answers. I want to help them incorporate their new skills and knowledge into their view of the world, and help them synthesize something new from what they have learned. I want to be flexible, to be able to teach concepts in different ways to different learners. I want to share my excitement about learning something new; let the students see that I growing and learning with them. I am trying to become this person every day.”
